I stood with the pious but I did not progress with them. I stood with the warriors in the cause but I did not progress a single step with them. I stood with those who pray excessively and those who fast excessively, but I did not progress a footstep. Then I said, "O God, what is the way to You?" and God said, "Leave yourself and come".

میں نیک لوگوں کے ساتھ کھڑا ہوا لیکن اُن کے ساتھ ترقی نہ کر سکا۔ میں راہِ خدا کے مجاہدوں کے ساتھ کھڑا ہوا لیکن اُن کے ساتھ ایک قدم بھی نہ بڑھ سکا۔ میں زیادہ نماز پڑھنے والوں اور زیادہ روزہ رکھنے والوں کے ساتھ کھڑا ہوا، لیکن ایک قدم بھی نہ چل سکا۔ پھر میں نے کہا، "اے خدا، تیری طرف راستہ کیا ہے؟" اور خدا نے فرمایا، "اپنے آپ کو چھوڑ دو اور آؤ"۔
وقفتُ مع الأبرارِ فلم أتقدّم معهم، ووقفتُ مع المجاهدينَ فما تقدّمتُ معهم خُطوة، ووقفتُ مع المُكثرينَ من الصلاةِ والصيامِ فما خَطوتُ خُطوة. ثمّ قلت: «إلهي، ما الطريقُ إليك؟» فقال: «اترك نفسك وتعالَ».
Je me tins avec les pieux mais je ne progressai point avec eux. Je me tins avec les combattants dans la voie de Dieu mais je ne fis pas un seul pas avec eux. Je me tins avec ceux qui prient à l'excès et ceux qui jeûnent à l'excès, mais je ne fis pas un seul pas. Alors je dis : « Ô Dieu, quel est le chemin vers Toi ? » Et Dieu dit : « Laisse-toi toi-même et viens. »
Sâlihlerle durdum, ama onlarla ilerleyemedim. Mücâhitlerle durdum, ama onlarla bir adım bile ilerleyemedim. Çokça namaz kılanlar ve çokça oruç tutanlarla durdum, ama bir adım bile yürüyemedim. Sonra dedim ki: "Ey Allah'ım, Sana giden yol nedir?" Allah dedi ki: "Nefsini bırak ve gel."
با نیکان ایستادم، اما با آنان پیش نرفتم. با مجاهدان ایستادم، اما با آنان حتی یک گام پیش نرفتم. با کثیرالصّلاة و کثیرالصّوم ایستادم، اما یک گام نیز برنداشتم. آنگاه گفتم: «خدایا، راه به سویِ تو چیست؟» و خدا فرمود: «خود را رها کن و بیا.»
Aku berdiri bersama orang-orang saleh, namun aku tidak maju bersama mereka. Aku berdiri bersama para mujahid, namun aku tidak melangkah satu langkah pun bersama mereka. Aku berdiri bersama orang-orang yang banyak bersembahyang dan banyak berpuasa, namun aku tidak melangkah satu langkah pun. Lalu aku berkata, "Ya Allah, apakah jalan menuju-Mu?" Dan Allah berfirman, "Tinggalkan dirimu dan datanglah."
